RP bets leave for Asean Primary Schools Sports Olympiad
MANILA---Amidst a promise of a better showing, the crack 4-man Philippine team to the ASEAN Primary Schools Sports Olympiad 2010 (APSSO) Chess Championships leaves for Jakarta on Wednesday via Philippine Airlines.
Led by Palarong Pambansa Mandaluyong meet vice champion Raul “Rhal” Sol Cruz of La Salle Green Hills (LSGH), Daryl Unix Samantila of Adamson University, Marie Antoinette San Diego of Cavite, and Stephone Rome Pangilinan of Bulacan, the Filipinos will see action in the meet slated from Nov. 4 to 10 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Organized by the Ministry of National Education and The Directorate of Kindergarten and Elementary School Education of Indonesia, APSSO, an annual sports competition for elementary athletes was created to improve and develop sports at an early age promoting an intelligent and strong young generation that foster friendship, sportsmanship and respect with fellow athletes. It is participated by 10 Asean countries – Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Brunei and the Philippines. Other events include football, table tennis, badminton and athletics.
“We expect these young and talented players to perform well as usual and bring honors to the country,” said International Arbiter and National Master Erwin L. Carag, RP head coach.
“Most of these players did very well during the ASEAN age-group chess championships held in Subic, so it will not be a surprise that they will perform just as well in the ASEAN level,” added La Salle Green Hills (LSGH) Head Coach Carag, who bagged the Best Coach award in the 86th NCAA chess tournament.
