RP team gains share of 3rd place in Asean Primary School chess

THE Philippine chess team tied for third along with two others after yesterday’s third round of the ASEAN Primary School Sports Olympiad 2010 (APSSO) Chess Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Backed-up by Mandaluyong City mayor Benhur Abalos Jr. and representative Neptali “Boyet” Gonzales, the Filipino grade schoolers collected 5.0 points, the same output of Indonesia Team 1 and Team 2 in the standard team boys competition.

Daryl Samantila won his third round game against Rozie Adam of Indonesia 3 to raise his output to 2.5 points. Rhal Sol Cruz Jr got his third consecutive draw vs Harleiff bin Haniff of Malaysia while Stephen Pangilinan lost to Andika Yogi of Indonesia 1.

Indonesia Team 3 led by Ikhsan Siregar's perfect 3.0 points is on top with 6.0 points, followed by Malaysia with 5.5 points.

Singapore is in 6th spot with 4.5 points while Vietnam is in 7th place with with 4.0 points. Brunei is at the bottom with 1.0 pt.

In the girls division, Marie Antoinette San Diego failed to continue her winning run after yielding to Dita Karenza of Indonesia to remain stuck at 2.0 points in three rounds.

RP team coach International Arbiter and National Master Erwin Carag, said that the boys have a big chance of making it to the Top 3 with this good start.

The six-round event is organized by the Indonesian Chess Federation with Irwansyah Sinuruya as Chief Arbiter.

Organized by the Ministry of National Education and The Directorate of Kindergarten and Elementary School Education of Indonesia, the APSSO is an annual sports event featuring elementary athletes designed to improve and develop sports at an early age and to promote an intelligent and strong young generation that foster friendship, sportsmanship and respect with fellow athletes.

It is participated by all 10 Asean countries competing in football, table tennis, badminton and athletics. /Correspondent MARLON BERNARDINO

    Congrats to Rhal so far for his undefeated run ! Three straight draws is just an indication that he's been undefeatable and probably still gathering his momentum for subsequent wins. Tinatantya pa lang siguro niya mga opponents nya as of now. Let's pray that he & his team-mates gather enough steam towards the home-stretch for a possible top 1,2, or even at least top 3 finish.
