  1. This is the final round of the 4-day PAYA inter-school tournament. Rhal's La Salle Team is leading by just half point from Claret and they need 2 wins in 4 boards to win the championship. In the battle for board honors, Rhal and Lopez of Claret are tied with 5.5 points in 6 games, thus the winner of this game not only will lead his team to the title but win the coveted gold for Board 1 honors.

Luckily, Rhal won as his opponent committed a fatal blunder in the R & N endgame. And 2 of his team mates also won, Rocky Camarista and Dominic De Leon that gave the 2010 Championship for the Midget Division to La Salle.

  2. This game was monitored by Ateneo Coach NM Perez who personally congratulated me of Rhal's improved play and excellent positional judgment: exchanging the B for N to create a weakness in the opponent's pawn structure and then attacking that weakness with a R on the open file assisted by the centralized N.

  3. Incidentally, Positional Judgment was the topic of Rhal's last training session with NM Carag. It is a topic from Kotov's Play Like a GM.

  5. 4 and a half years later, 2015, NM Perez was promoted as Head Coach of Ateneo and is recruiting Rhal, who has just graduated from high school, to play for Ateneo!
