1. d4 d5 2. Bf4 Nf6 3. e3 e6
Symmetrical central pawn formations do not, in general, allow a suitable basis for attacking operations. The reason is that in most cases there will be one or more files which both sides will have to occupy, and the result will usually be exchanges with consequent drawish tendencies. Euwe and Kramer in The Middlegame

4. Bd3 Nbd7 5. Nf3 Be7
The first principle of opening play is rapid development of all the pieces. Yusupov in Build Up Your Chess

6. O-O O-O
One of the most important guidelines in chess is to protect your K from harm. Watson in Mastering the Chess Openings

7. c4 b6 8. Nc3 Bb7
Bs are best deployed on the longest diagonals during opening play. Capablanca in Chess Fundamentals

9. cxd5 exd5 10. Rc1 c5!
By controlling the central squares, the pawns make them inaccessible to enemy pieces. Yakovlev in Planning in the Middlegame

11. Ne5
The support-points are at e5 & c5 (e4 & c4 from Black's point of view); the timely occupation of one of these support-points often is of crucial importance in these positions. Euwe and Kramer in The Middlegame

11... cxd4
Before making the exchange which will open a file, it is always wise to ask what advantage this will give us. If none, then it is better to put off the exchange until further preparations have been made. Euwe and Kramer in The Middlegame

[11... Nxe5 a) 12. Bxe5 c4; b) 12.dxe5 Ne4 13.Qc2 Nxc3 14.Qxc3 Bg5]
