    Pau opened with the Italian Game, 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bc4, and Rhal responded with the Hungarian Defense, 3... Be7. After 4 O-O Nf6 5 d4, the opening will transpose to the Scotch Gambit with 5... exd4; Kolisch vs Paulsen 1861, Metger vs Mieses 1889 and Schallopp vs Charousek 1896.

    3... Be7 is slightly passive when White still has the option of d4. After d4 d6 (4... exd4 5 Nxd4 d6 6 O-O Nf6 7 Nc3 O-O is a rather prospectless position for Black; in particular after 8 h3 he has spatial and developmental difficulties) 5 d5 Nb8 6 Bd3 White has a lasting advantage.
