Elijah is one of the chess scholars of FAITH in Tanuan Batangas. He placed 2nd in the Angpin Cup - 12 Under Age Group Division where Rhal finished on the 10th spot.
NM Maga analyzed this game with Rhal on August 9, 2010 and pointed the following:
1) 13... h6 This is a weakening move for pawns in front of your castled K should not be moved unless necessary. This was said in the classic war movie The Guns of Navarone by Gregory Peck, "Well do it if necessary, when necessary but not before."
And in chess, the golden rule is do not move pawns in front of your K.
Rhal reasoned that he played h6 to prevent a B pin on g5. But Mason in the book The Art of Chess wrote, "Do not move your R pawn to prevent B pinning your N."
In this position, NM Maga recommends Bf8 to give the R an eye in the center or Qd7 to connect the Rs.
2)16... Nb6 The position demands c6 and Bxc6 to control the diagonal.
3) 25... Nxe4 Black has the advantage and Rybka evaluates the position as -1.00. White has a backward pawn at c3 which B's R can attack by Rc8 and W is in big trouble. Rhal should have won this game if he did not get into time trouble (25 minutes per player only).
