MANILA, Philippines – La Salle Greenhills (LSGH) bet Raul “Rhal” Sol Cruz, Jr. captured the juniors title in the 107th anniversary of Meralco dubbed as the Battle of Meralco Grandmasters Chess Championships.
Sol Cruz, a Grade 6 pupil mentored by International Arbiter-National Master (NM) Erwin Carag, swept his all matches in the five-round Swiss-system on Saturday at the Meralco head office in Ortigas in Pasig City.
He bested Ronald Dimaguila, Amiel Christian Emata, Jose Lorenzo Masa, JC Andan and Elmer del Rosario in the event supervised by NM Eduardo Agagon.
High school bets Marc Alexis Marcalinas of Binangonan, Rizal and Miguel Thaddeus Vergara of Bocaue, Bulacan were the second and third placers, respectively, with 4 points each.
Sol Cruz, who teamed up with fellow LSGH ace Giovanni “Gio” Mejia, took the team bronze medal in this year's National Capital Region (NCR) Palarong Pambansa, representing Mandaluyong City.

3rd Gold: MERALCO Jr. Grandmaster
Rhal won over a fellow grade schooler (Jose Masa) and 4 highschoolers (Emata, ?, Andan, & del Rosario) to top the BATLLE of MERALCO JR. GRANDMASTERS, a 5-round Swiss Rapid Play with 10 minutes per player, on MERALCO's 107th Anniversary.
For the feat, he won a gold medal, a per win incentive of P100, and the top prize of P500.

NAGPAKITANG gilas ang dating World Chess Olympiad member National Master Mirabeau Maga matapos talunin ang Meralco Chess Club woodpushers, 7.5-1.5, sa rare nine-board simultaneous chess exhibition na ginanap sa Lopez Building sa Meralco head office sa Pasig City. Nagtala si NM Maga ng 7 wins, 1 draw kay junior player at Palarong NCR bronze medalist Rhal Sol Cruz Jr., at 1 loss kay 2009 MACE Co-Champion Jay Dicen ng Security, na lusot din kina NM Almario Bernardino sa 1st simul event last week at naka draw kay Asia’s First GM Eugene Torre sa PARA-Fund-Raising Simul last September. Ito ang second Simultaneous Match chess activities para sa Meralco Employees’ Day celebration sa March 20. Ang nasabing simul ay parte rin ng preparation para sa 1st MVP (Manny V. Pangilinan) Olympics kung saan ang chess ay isa sa events. |
